Ghost of Yotei: Building Bridges Choice Guide
Building Bridges is an optional Tale in Ghost of Yotei where a Matsumae clan samurai recruits Atsu to help stop ronin who are trying to burn a bridge he is trying to build with the locals’ help. Sanjuro, a settler, is helping him and will volunteer to stand watch alongside Atsu to stop the ronin’s attacks at night.
However, Sanjuro abandons Atsu during his part of the watch, and she wakes up to find the ronin about to light the bridge on fire. After stopping the ronin, she discovers that Sanjuro is the one who recruited them in the first place. Now, she needs to decide if she should catch Sanjuro and bring him to the Matsumae or let him go free.

Should You Catch Sanjuro or Let Him Go in Building Bridges
After you defeat the ronin trying to burn down the bridge and the last one is left alive, a cutscene will play out showing Sanjuro arriving to plead with Atsu. You’ll be given two dialogue choices:
- I still have a job to do.
- I understand, but this won’t end well.
Gameplay-wise, your choice does not affect the outcome. Atsu will receive 450 coins as a reward for completing the quest, regardless of how she chooses to deal with Sanjuro, and the bridge will remain standing. However, from a story perspective, the final cutscene will play out slightly differently depending on your decision. Here is how it unfolds.
What Happens If You Catch Sanjuro in Building Bridges
- I still have a job to do.
Atsu will apprehend Sanjuro and present him to the Matsumae samurai who hired Atsu for the job. The Matsumae will not kill Sanjuro and will say: “Enough blood has been shed tonight. Go. And remember this kindness when you speak to others.”
Sanjuro will be freed, and the samurai will bid him to leave. This choice can be considered the “good” outcome, as it offers a resolution to the matter.
What Happens If You Let Sanjuro Go in Building Bridges
- I understand, but this won’t end well
Atsu will let Sanjuro run away after thanking Atsu, while leaving the bridge intact. The Matsumae samurai will arrive the next day and point out that, although the bridge still stands, Sanjuro is missing. Atsu will tell him that she let some “saboteurs” live, as requested, indirectly confirming Sanjuro’s involvement in the burning incident.
The Matsumae will be frustrated that you denied him a chance to speak directly with the culprits to make them see reason, but he will reward you anyway. This choice can be considered the “bad” outcome, as the samurai doesn’t get a chance to earn the goodwill of the people.
