How to Solve All Nine Tails Puzzle Boxes in Ghost of Yotei

Ghost of Yotei features 12 Kitsune Puzzle Boxes that players are going to need to solve if they want to test their mind and get some pretty useful loot for Atsu’s upgrades. Each of these 12 Puzzle Boxes can be a tad confusing to solve, and locating all 12 of them isn’t going to be the easiest thing to come across. As such, we’ve decided to lend a hand and a mind by providing you with the location and solution to every Puzzle Box in Ghost of Yotei, as seen below.

The Puzzle Boxes in Ghost of Yotei are always obtained in a set order, no matter which location you pick them up from. As such, we’ve listed all 12 locations below, and then the solutions after.

All Puzzle Box Locations in Ghost of Yotei

Puzzle Box #1 – Crossroads Trading Post

Crossroads Trading Post is a Yotei Six Outpost located in the south of Crimson Forest, directly under the “R” of “Forest” when looking at the map. After clearing out the Hideout, head to the Altar of Reflection where you’ll find the Puzzle Box on the floor.

Puzzle Box #2 – Snow Drift Springs Hideout

To access Snow Drift Springs Hideout, head east of the Crimson Forest, where you’ll find a locked entrance and 3 distinct fox statues. You’ll need to use a torch found in the braziers to light the correct fox statues. The furthest left area needs to have the sat fox with a stick in its mouth lit. The right row of statues needs the fox with a raised left paw to be lit. The third row of statues is found at the back of a hill to climb, and you need to light the lying down fox. After, follow through and complete the hideout, where at the Altar of Reflection, you’ll find the Kitsune Puzzle Box.

Puzzle Box #3 – Sakuru Woods

Head into the Sakura Woods and go directly to the “R” in “Sakura” to find a group of shinobi standing around a corpse. The Puzzle Box is on the corpse, so make sure to loot it. This is the only Puzzle Box that doesn’t have a point of interest, like a Hideout or a Kitsune Altar, and is simply found in the wild.

Puzzle Box #4 – Kitsune Altar (Sentinel Forest)

Head north of the Sakuru Woods, where you can then enter the Sentinel Forest. It’s just a short journey north of the lake in Sakuru Woods, on a snowy hill. Simply approach the Kitsune Altar and grab the Puzzle Box, with no traps in sight.

Puzzle Box #5 – Kitsune Altar (Sarobetsu Forest)

This Kitsune Altar and Puzzle Box is found in the Sarobetsu Forest, directly between the second “S” and “U” of “Sarobetsu”. It’s on a snowy hill with harsh conditions, so beware the cold.

Puzzle Box #6 – Kitsune Altar (Teshio Coast)

Head west to the Teshio Coast range, where, in the south of this area along the coastal cliff, you’ll find a Kitsune Altar that houses the next Puzzle Box.

Puzzle Box #7 – Snow's Blight Hideout

North of the furthest west point of Teshio Ridge, you’ll come across a Snow’s Blight Shrine that features a puzzle to complete. You’ll need to use a torch from a brazier to light the nearby lanterns, and the correct lanterns to light are the ones where a lit lantern is already found above them. Then, turn the fox statues on the right in the same direction as the fox statues on the wall. From left to right, that’s left, forward, right, backward. After, you’ll unlock a door to enter the Snow’s Blight Hideout. Clear out this Yotei Six Camp of enemies and head to the Altar of Reflection to find the Puzzle Box on the floor.

Puzzle Box #8 – Nakajima Ice Cave Hideout

In the north west area of Sarobetsu Lake, you’ll find the Nakajima Ice Cave. There will be two foxes at the entrance. Turn the right fox so it’s facing the right, and turn the left fox so it’s facing the left, to open the door. You can then climb up the parkour area to find the Nakajima Ice Cave Hideout. Clear out the Yotei Six Camp, find the two foxes in the back right corner, and rotate the left fox so it’s facing right, and the right fox so it’s facing left, to reach the Altar of Reflection and the Puzzle Box.

Puzzle Box #9 – Deserted Village

The Deserted Village is found in the south region of Takodake Mountains, just below the “K”, “O”, and “D” of “Takodake” when looking at the map. This is a Yotei Six Camp, so clear it out of enemies and look to the Altar of Reflection to find the Puzzle Box.

Puzzle Box #10 – Kitsune Altar (Shipwreck Shoal)

Journey across the north east of Teshio Ridge, where you’ll come across the Shipwreck Shoal. Continue on this path to locate the Kitsune Altar, which is found just above the “H” in “Shipwreck” when looking at the map, and the Puzzle Box is placed on the altar.

Puzzle Box #11 – Soya Port

Soya Port is located in the far north region along the Sarufutsu River. Players can find the Soya Port just above the “River” when looking at the map. This is a Yotei Six Camp, so clear it of enemies and locate the Puzzle Box at the Altar of Reflection.

Puzzle Box #12 – Cape Inari Hideout

Cape Inari is at the very northern point of Teshio Ridge. There’s a locked door to access it, and the solution involves locating a torch found in a brazier, and then venturing to the left gap in the wall to light a fox statue with an “M” symbol, and then the gap in the wall to the right of the door, also with an “M” symbol. Continue through the cave and only interact with the fox statues that have the “M” symbol, and then clear out the Cape Inari Hideout, as this is a Yotei Six Camp, and at the end is an Altar of Reflection and a Puzzle Box.
