“Slimy And Greedy”: Donkey Kong Bananza’s DK Island DLC Is Being Slammed For Its $20 Price Tag
Donkey Kong Bananza’s DK Island DLC is getting banana slammed by fans for its costly $20 asking price, with several players pointing out that it feels like postgame content that’s been purposefully cut out of the base game.
It hasn’t been that long since Donkey Kong Bananza, one of my favourite games of 2025 so far, released. With that in mind, I don’t think anyone was expecting yesterday’s big Nintendo Direct to reveal that it’s already getting an expansion pack that takes DK and Pauline to DK Island to hunt for emeralds.
While more Donkey Kong Bananza might seem like it can only be a good thing, that isn’t exactly how it’s all gone down. In what has become a surprisingly common theme from yesterday’s Direct announcements, Nintendo fans aren’t happy with the DLC’s high price, especially since it feels like content that should have been in the base game.
Donkey Kong Bananza Fans Don't Think DK Island Is Worth $20
"SILKSONG…….. THE FULL GAME……. IS TWENTY…. USD"
Shortly after the DK Island DLC was shadowdropped, Donkey Kong fans were shocked to learn that the expansion costs a whopping $20. Although the DLC has quite a bit to it with the return of DK Island and a new game mode, most agree that it’s not worth the same price as the entirety of Hollow Knight: Silksong.
To be fair, Silksong’s ridiculously low price has had its own discord in how it sets standards for gaming prices, but the point is that DK Island just doesn’t have that much to it.
Over on Twitter, _TheRandomGuy__ compared the DLC to Super Mario Odyssey’s Mushroom Kingdom and the free Luigi’s Balloon World update that was added post-launch. Only this time, we’re having to pay a surprising amount to return to a fan-favourite location and get a new game mode.
It’s not just the high price that’s bugging fans, though. Alongside theories that DK Island was supposed to be part of the main game since it’s taken such a short time to put together, a lot of fans simply think it’s not that good. Redditor LilBranMuffin called it a “waste” and said that there’s nothing to do on DK Island, while Emerald Rush simply “sucks”.
Of course, there are some fans who seem to be enjoying the trip back to DK Island and all of the easter eggs and references that can be found, but it seems like the majority see DK Island as the expensive straw that broke the camel Bananza’s back.
